All Children Are Equal: Every Child Deserves the Same Rights and Opportunities

Three children from different backgrounds sitting together, laughing and sharing food as friends

Children do not judge each other by skin color, nationality, social status or wealth. They do not care whether another child is Black or white, rich or poor. For a child, another child is simply a person someone to play with, talk to, laugh with and become friends with.Children are not born with hatred, prejudice or discrimination.

They do not naturally believe that one person is worth more than another. But then we the adults enter their world.Through our words, attitudes and behavior, children begin to notice how society divides people. They hear that some people are treated as more important while others are treated as less important. Slowly, a child who once saw only another human being begins to notice the differences that adults have taught them to see.

There is another important truth that should never be forgotten: every child has the right to education.Learn more about children's right to education:

It does not matter whether a child was born in Bangladesh or Norway, into a poor family or a wealthy one. All children have equal value, equal potential and the same fundamental right to learn, grow and build a better future. Education is also one of the most powerful tools for promoting equality among children, reducing discrimination and helping young people understand and respect one another.

Yet even here, adults continue to divide people. Some children receive opportunities that others may never have. The painful truth is that children do not create racism, discrimination and prejudice they learn them from the world around them. Adults pass on fear, anger and stereotypes, and then wonder why society becomes increasingly divided.

Perhaps it is time to stop and remember something children understand naturally:All children are equal. Every child deserves dignity. Every child deserves education. Every child deserves an opportunity. Every child deserves to be treated with respect regardless of skin color, nationality, culture or the family they were born into.Maybe the problem was never with children. Maybe we simply forgot how to look at another person through a child's eyes without labels, without prejudice and without borders.
